About
The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering
Civil Engineering is primarily
concerned with the design, construction and maintenance of
works such as buildings, bridges, harbours, canals, railways,
airports, dams, power projects, highways, water supply systems
and sewage treatment works.
Transportation systems, traffic
engineering, urban planning and surveying are also important
areas of Civil Engineering. This branch of Engineering is,
therefore, concerned with the provision of many of the basic
services required for the development of modern society.
Its successful practice requires the efficient application
of mathematics, physics and economics.
Civil Engineers are usually employed with organisations which plan, design
and construct the facilities mentioned above, which comprise the essential
physical infrastructure for any nation. They also engage in research and development,
oriented towards the development of capabilities in all of these fields and
in such special areas as the treatment and the most advantageous use of water
resources and engineering materials.
