As of 2007 the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is a participant in the Nortel Technology Solutions Academy. This participation affords the department access to Nortel’s industry-proven courseware, lab equipment at reduced cost and the opportunity for students to earn a Nortel Professional Certification.
Courseware
Nortel has provided learning materials on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Also known as Internet Telephony, this technology facilitates the transmission of voice communication over any Internet Protocol based network. It is a foundational building block of next generation networks that utilize a single infrastructure for the transmission of voice, video and data.
The courseware was developed in conjunction with subject matter experts from both the research and development and commercial sectors. Based on industry requirements, it includes:
- VoIP student guide, a text that offers a structured introduction to the subject
- Reference materials, including a text on voice telephony basics and Nortel white papers
- Hands-on lab guide detailing over twenty hours of lab work
A subset of this material has already been integrated into the level three course Telecommunications Networks (ECNG 3003).
Lab Equipment
To complement the new learning materials and put theory into practice the department has recently purchased a suite of laboratory equipment based around the Nortel VoIP Business Communication Manager 50 (BCM50) communications system. The BCM50 is a platform for converged voice and data communications for small to medium business. The capabilities of the BCM50 include IP telephony, voice messaging, unified messaging, universal Internet access and contact centres with skills-based routing. The provided VoIP lab case studies cover:
- VoIP protocols
- Security in VoIP networks
- VoIP over wireless LAN
Certification
The Department has been certified as a test centre for Nortel professional certification exams. After completing ECNG 3003 students would have covered the fundamentals necessary to challenge the Nortel certification exam #920-803, Nortel Certified Technology Specialist – Converged IP Solutions. With some preparation specific to the exam, students may opt to attempt this online test after completion of ECNG 3003.
