UWI - UTT Joint Degree Programmes in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering

Welcome to the Home Page of UWI-UTT Joint Bachelor of Applied Technology (BTech) Degree Programmes, offered jointly by UWI and UTT in the areas of Electrical Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology.  Technology education and training are based on real world situations, recognizing modern demands for the introduction and use of innovative tools, processes and technologies.

These Bachelor of Applied Technology Degrees in Mechanical Engineering Technology and Electrical Engineering Technology have been designed to produce an Engineering Technologist or an Incorporated Engineer, who is different from a Chartered or Registered Professional Engineer.  Their primary focus is not in the design or development of new technologies, plants, or processes, etc., as would be expected for Chartered engineers, but rather in overseeing the design, construction, installation, operation and maintenance of known technology engineering installations, that is, implementing and managing current and emerging electrical and mechanical technologies. The main objective of the applied engineering degrees is to provide a cadre of suitably qualified Engineering Technologists (called Incorporated Engineers in the UK) to strengthen the technical, supervisory and middle management levels of local industry.  According to the UK specifications, Incorporated Engineers must maintain their competency throughout their working life by virtue of their education, training and experience in order to:

  1. Use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to apply existing and emerging technology.
  2. Apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate and maintain engineering products, processes, systems and services.
  3. Provide technical and commercial management.
  4. Manage continuous quality improvement.

These programmes provide an avenue through which working non-certified Engineering Technologists and technologist aspirants can upgrade their qualifications to a professional level, thereby creating a path for continuous growth and development.
